Last month, I had the opportunity to return to my secondary school and speak to sixth formers about life after secondary school.

I shared some of the biggest challenges I faced, including struggles with my mental health, missing out on university entry grades and the tough journey to find a “career” job after graduating. Ultimately, I forged my own path, setting goals which aligned with the unique plan God had for me.

At SisterSaid, we’re building a community grounded in peer mentorship, but there’s something deeply powerful about reaching back to support those coming up behind us. Many of us may hesitate to call ourselves trailblazers or celebrate our achievements—but think of how proud your 18-year-old self would be. We all have something to teach those with less experience and in doing so, leave a legacy that extends beyond ourselves.

Mentorship is a key theme in the Bible. Many great men and women are highlighted and their mentors are often central to their stories. For Joshua, there was Moses; for Elisha, Elijah; for Ruth, Naomi—and so on.

We may have many goals for ourselves that we see as fulfilling our purpose. But have you considered empowering others as part of your goals?

As a woman, a first born & a minority, finding role models in my field who looked like me wasn’t easy. While I had people to look up to, our backgrounds often differed, creating a barrier when I sought relatable advice.

Relatable role models can make a profound impact. So, give back to your community. Be the everyday role model who inspires young people to dream big and set goals they know they can achieve!
